U.S. and Mexican authorities collaborated to arrest several suspects allegedly linked to the Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generacion (CJNG) after shots were fired at the southern border in California.
Customs and Border Protection (CBP) just released details about the disturbing incident, which unfolded on Jan. 23 near Tecate, Mexico.
U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) agents in San Diego Sector responded to reported gunfire along the border and a CBP Air and Marine Operations (AMO) helicopter crew was dispatched to the scene to provide aerial support.
Mexican military and law enforcement assets were also deployed on the other side of the border.
“The aircrew observed several armed individuals on the Mexican side, and a drone operated by the suspects was detected in the vicinity,” CBP AMO explained in a statement.
“While providing critical overwatch, U.S. Border Patrol safely apprehended one individual running northbound, away from the gunfire, while Mexican authorities detained three armed suspects and recovered abandoned AK-47 magazines.”
USBP announced that the subjects arrested are believed to be “enforcers” for the CJNG — one of the most powerful and violent international criminal networks based in Mexico.

No information was released about the individual caught on the U.S. side of the border.
The State Department designated CJNG as a foreign terrorist organization and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist entity in February 2025.
