Federal authorities are pushing back against claims that they did not attempt to take custody of an illegal alien charged with sexually assaulting a woman in Maine.
On June 16, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) apprehended Mahamat Djamous, a criminal illegal alien from Chad.
Djamous, who also uses the alias “Aguid Mahamat,” legally entered the U.S. on Nov. 11, 2024, with permission to stay in the country until May 10, 2025, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) explained to Border Hawk in a statement.
He failed to depart on time and has remained in the U.S. illegally ever since.
For reasons that remain unclear, Djamous was released on bond on July 21, 2026.
Days later, the Chadian was arrested for sexual assault in Lewiston, Maine — a hotbed for African ‘migrants’ and the chaos that comes with them.
A 27-year-old woman told police she had been inebriated when she was approached by Djamous, who led her to his SUV and transported her a block away, where he sexually assaulted her for approximately an hour, and then brought her back to the pickup location.
Djamous, who told authorities he was driving for Lyft, was arrested on Aug. 1 and charged with gross sexual assault.
On Aug. 4, ICE lodged a detainer for Djamous with the Androscoggin County Jail.
However, jail officials say they never received the paperwork and released Djamous on $3,000 cash bail on Aug. 10.
“Without the paperwork, a jail official said Tuesday, a suspect cannot be held if he or she makes bail. Additionally, due to Maine’s ‘ICE Out of Policing’ law that went into effect July 29, jail officials are not allowed to hold inmates solely for civil immigration enforcement,” the Sun Journal reports.
DHS has rejected the jail’s claims as “FALSE.”
“The Androscoggin County jail is lying to protect itself after shamelessly releasing a sexual predator into the surrounding community on August 10, 2026,” a DHS spokesperson said.
“Politicians must stop putting politics above public safety. This type of insanity leads to more crimes and more innocent victims.”
Djamous is apparently back on the loose but is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 2.
