The Trump administration slammed officials in a Virginia sanctuary county for failing to honor an immigration detainer lodged against a Salvadoran illegal alien charged with murdering a man just one day after being released from jail.
On Wednesday, the Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) arrested 23-year-old Marvin Fernando Morales-Ortez at the conclusion of an hours-long manhunt that led to schools being locked down.
Morales-Ortez was charged with second-degree murder for allegedly shooting a man to death inside a residence in Reston.
Disturbingly, Morales-Ortez had been set loose on Tuesday after malicious wounding and firearms charges against him were dropped and a standing detainer request filed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was ignored.
Prior to Wednesday’s shooting, Morales-Ortez had been charged with at least seven crimes in Fairfax County dating back to 2021 — including first-degree murder, according to local media.
In the lone instance where Morales-Ortez was found guilty — on a theft charge — he was fined $300 but never paid.
Morales-Ortez is once again in FCPD custody and a new ICE hold has been filed against him.
In a press release, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said it “vehemently condemns Fairfax County’s sanctuary policies” and called on officials to honor the current detainer.
“There is blood on the hands of Fairfax County politicians for pushing policies that released this illegal alien from jail and onto the streets of Virginia,” stated DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin.
“Fairfax County refused to honor ICE’s detainer and release him into their custody. Just hours after being released from jail, he committed murder in cold blood. Sanctuary policies have deadly consequences.”

Morales-Ortez and his mother were unleashed into the U.S. by the Obama administration after illegally crossing the southern border in 2016 near Hidalgo, TX.
In 2022, the Biden regime dismissed his immigration proceedings and marked him as a non-enforcement priority.
