An illegal alien from Mexico is facing significant charges for killing an American citizen in drunk-driving crash in Indiana this month, authorities say.
The Lawrence Police Department responded to a collision just after 2 a.m. on Aug. 1.
Daniel Mathias, 50, was found deceased in one of the heavily damaged vehicles, but the other vehicle was empty, Fox 59 reports.
Officers located the second driver walking less than a mile from the crash site and took him into custody.
Crisanto Pablo Hernandez, 40, was charged with leaving the scene of a vehicle crash that resulted in catastrophic injury or death, operating a vehicle while intoxicated resulting in death, failure to remain at the scene of an accident, and driving without ever having received a license and causing catastrophic injury or death.
“On Aug. 4, investigators obtained security footage from a nearby motor shop. Court documents say the video allegedly shows Hernandez strike Mathias’ car. Hernandez is then seen getting out, walking over to Mathias, then walking away,” WTHR reports.
Investigators say Hernandez was traveling nearly 60 mph at the time of the collision.
“On September 12, 2021, CBP encountered Crisanto Pablo Hernandez, a criminal illegal alien from Mexico, near Ajo, Arizona. Hernandez accepted voluntary return to Mexico,” DHS told Border Hawk.
“He then illegally reentered the country at an unknown time and place.”

Daniel Mathias is survived by his daughter, partner, parents, and extended family, according to his obituary.
