An Ohio state representative who was born in Somalia attacked federal immigration enforcement during a speech at a ‘No Kings’ demonstration this weekend.
Rep. Munira Yasin Abdullahi (OH-9), whose family arrived to the U.S. as ‘refugees’ when she was a toddler, wore a “Muslim American Society” sweatshirt to the anti-Trump protest in Columbus, which was one of many that took place across the country on Saturday.
“Are we going to get ICE out of our communities? No more!” Abdullahi shouted at a cheering audience.
“My family fled war to come to this country to seek a better life… Everyone deserves that better life.”

Abdullahi is one of two Somalis serving in the Ohio legislature (both are Democrats), and is the first Muslim woman to hold the position.
“She grew up in Columbus and earned a Political Science degree from The Ohio State University,” her official bio states.
“She works as the programs director for the Muslim American Society. She is honored to be the first Somali Muslim woman to win an election in the State of Ohio.”
