An illegal alien facing charges for killing a pedestrian in a hit-and-run DUI crash in Indiana last weekend was previously in federal custody on multiple occasions, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has informed Border Hawk.

The horrific crash unfolded at around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday evening in Indianapolis.

An SUV traveling at high-speed slammed into another car and then careened across traffic into a gas station where it struck a woman who was walking in the lot, investigators say.

The driver of the striking vehicle then bailed out on foot but was captured a short time later, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) said.

The female pedestrian, identified as 33-year-old Tamara Renee Thomas, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Edwin Alexander Sosa-Gonzalez, 22, was booked into Marion County Adult Detention Center on charges of leaving the scene of a vehicle accident that caused death or catastrophic injury, operating while intoxicated causing death, and leaving the scene of a vehicle accident resulting in death.

Sosa-Gonzalez registered a blood alcohol content of 0.229 at the time of his apprehension and showed signs of heavy intoxication, according to an arrest affidavit reviewed by WTHR.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has lodged a detainer against Sosa-Gonzalez, a citizen of Honduras who is in the U.S. illegally.

Sosa-Gonzalez was arrested by U.S. Border Patrol after crossing the southern border into Texas in July 2021, but was quickly unleashed into the interior by the Biden regime.

In February 2024, Sosa-Gonzalez was arrested by IMPD for operating a vehicle while intoxicated – endangering a person and operating a vehicle without ever receiving a license following a crash that damaged three parked vehicles.

He was transferred to ICE custody but was released on bond just a day later.

Sosa-Gonzalez is scheduled to appear back in court on Oct. 1, 2026.

“This illegal alien, who had been released into our country by the Biden Administration, took the life of 33-year-old Tamara Renee Thomas because he was drunk behind the wheel. He has now been charged with hit-and-run and driving under the influence,” DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin told Border Hawk.

“This disaster was completely avoidable, and were it not for the reckless open-border policies of the Biden Administration, this woman would still be alive. My thoughts and prayers are with Tamara’s family and friends.”

Tamara Renee Thomas, who reportedly grew up in Indianapolis, is survived by her young son and family.

“Tamara was a regular person who loved, laughed, struggled, and lived life like the rest of us. She wasn’t famous or wealthy, just a daughter, family member, and friend who was taken from us far too soon,” a GoFundMe established for her funeral and burial expenses states.

“Any funds raised beyond funeral expenses will be placed into a trust for Tamara’s birth son, who was placed for adoption several years ago. It is our family’s wish that any remaining funds honor Tamara’s memory by helping provide for his future.”
