An Idaho family has reportedly filed a lawsuit against a foreign big rig driver and the company that employed him months after a shocking road rage incident on a Wyoming highway.
On Nov. 20, 2025, Idaho resident Scott Schaffer was leading a two-vehicle convoy carrying his family along Interstate 80 in Carbon County when they encountered a semi driven by Rabindranath Bunsee, according to court documents.
Schaffer told police he saw the tractor-trailer nearly ram his wife’s SUV while changing lanes, briefly forcing her off the road.
Schaffer said the truck operator then swerved at him and ran his pickup off the highway, as well.
When Schaffer regained the pavement, he said he attempted to pass the truck and saw the driver pointing a handgun out of the window.
“Mr. Schaffer then heard the gunshot and the bullet hit his vehicle and (he) was instantly scared for his life and the life of his 2-year-old daughter,” an evidentiary affidavit stated.
“It was not until she started moving that he realized she was not hit. He sped away as fast as possible to get away.”
Schaffer and his wife exited the highway and called police, who met them at a gas station to gather more information.
After observing a bullet hole in Schaffer’s passenger door, Wyoming Highway Patrol (WHP) began searching for the 18-wheeler and eventually pulled it over with assistance from the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office.
“We ordered the driver out of the vehicle and he wasn’t initially complying,” said WHP Trooper Cody Lenke.
A semi-automatic handgun was located inside the cab of the truck and authorities determined two rounds were missing from the magazine.
Despite Bunsee offering a contradictory tale of what transpired, he was arrested and charged with attempted second degree murder, two counts of aggravated assault and battery, threatening with a weapon, reckless driving, reckless conduct, and destruction of property.
During a preliminary hearing in December, Bunsee reportedly testified that Schaffer had yelled a racial slur at him and was the first to discharge a firearm.
WHP investigators did not located any evidence to support Bunsee’s claims.
Bunsee was scheduled to stand trial in June, but medical examiners determined he was mentally unfit and recommended he be committed to Wyoming State Hospital for rehabilitation until he is fit to face prosecution.
However, due to lack of bed space at the hospital, Bunsee was allowed to return to Florida under court-ordered restrictions to await an available bed and rescheduled trial.
The Idaho family has reportedly filed a lawsuit for emotional distress, psychological trauma, medical expenses, lost income and other injuries, and punitive damages against Bunsee and his former employer, J&A Logistics Transportation LLC.
“The complaint says J&A accumulated more than 150 unsafe-driving violations during the preceding 24 months, including 11 instances of drivers traveling at least 15 mph over the speed limit,” Cowboy State Daily reports.
“It lists 53 false-log violations and dozens of equipment problems, including 50 tire-pressure violations, 38 brake-adjustment violations, 22 automatic brake-adjustment failures and 17 brake out-of-service violations.”
J&A is also accused of employing drivers with drug and alcohol violations and some who did not possess valid licenses or had suspended commercial driver’s licenses.
The family’s attorneys say J&A drivers were also involved in at least 33 at-fault crashes from mid-2025 to early 2026, including one that left two people dead in Texas in October 2025.
Bunsee is a citizen of Trinidad and Tobago who legally entered the U.S. in 1981, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) told Alex Jones Network in a statement.
He has a prior conviction for reckless driving and arrests for indecent exposure, providing false identification, racing, possessing a stolen vehicle, petit theft, trespassing, and grand theft.
“The Trump administration is committed to restoring the rule of law and common sense to our immigration system, and will continue to fight for the arrest, detention, and removal of aliens who have no right to be in this country,” a DHS spokesperson told Border Hawk.
