ICE Busts Criminal Illegal Alien Working as Professor at University in Michigan

Federal immigration authorities say they arrested an illegal alien with a disturbing history of sex crimes who has been working as a professor at a university in Michigan.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the recent apprehension of Sumith Gunasekera, a Sri Lankan national who is in the U.S. illegally.

Gunasekera entered the U.S. in 1998 but then went to Canada before re-entering the U.S. on a student visa later that year.

In 2012, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services discovered the Sri Lankan had been convicted of serious crimes in Canada when he applied for a change in immigration status.

In August of 1998, Gunasekera was arrested for uttering death threats in Brampton, Ontario.

Three days later, he was arrested for invitation to sexual touching and sexual interference with a minor, DHS says.

He was convicted on the death threat and sexual interference charges in November of 1998 and sentenced to one month in prison and one year of probation.

In September of 2023, Gunasekera was arrested for open and gross lewdness in Las Vegas, NV.

The Las Vegas Justice Court later convicted Gunasekera of disorderly conduct and sentenced him to fines.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Detroit finally caught up with the Sri Lankan on Nov. 12 in Michigan.

During processing, Gunasekera told ICE officers that he was employed as an associate professor at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, MI.

Gunasekera has “repeatedly attempted to manipulate our immigration system” by filing various visa applications and appealing denials over the years, according to DHS.

“It’s sickening that a sex offender was working as a professor on an American college campus and was given access to vulnerable students to potentially victimize them,” stated DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin.

“Thanks to the brave ICE law enforcement officers, this sicko is behind bars and no longer able to prey on Americans. His days of exploiting the immigration system are OVER. Under President Trump and Secretary Noem, criminals are not welcome in the U.S.”
