The southern border wall will be painted black at the President’s direction in order to enhance its ability to deter illegal crossings.
Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem announced the project on Tuesday during a visit to Santa Teresa, NM.
“It’s tall, which makes it very, very difficult to climb, almost impossible. It also goes deep into the ground, which would make it very difficult, if not impossible, to dig under. And today we are also going to be painting it black,” Sec. Noem revealed during a press conference in front of the steel barrier.
“That is specifically at the request of the President, who understands that in the hot temperatures down here, when something is painted black, it gets even warmer, and it will make it even harder for people to climb.”

“So we are going to be painting the entire southern border wall black to make sure that we encourage individuals to not come into our country illegally,” Noem continued, explaining that the paint will also protect the barrier from rusting.
Noem participated in ceremonial rolling of several bollards alongside U.S. Border Patrol agents, however, a journalist who was present said workers soon switched over to paint sprayers to speed up the process.

President Trump planned to paint the border wall black during his first term, but his agenda was derailed by onerous government regulations that would have required an extensive study on potential environmental impacts.
NewsNation correspondent Ali Bradley shared footage of a prototype section of wall that was painted black in Calexico, CA, before the scheme was abandoned.
Fun fact: The black wall was actually the prototype under President Trump’s first term—They started painting it black in Calexico, California and then abandoned the task to put up more wall as fast as possible.

Sec. Noem says additional cameras, sensors, and other technology will also be added to existing barrier, along with new sections slated for construction as the current administration works to finish the wall President Trump started years ago.
