WATCH: Muslim Carjacker Killed During Running Gun Battle With California Police

A police officer was critically wounded and a violent suspect killed during a series of carjackings and shootings in California this week, authorities say.

The harrowing string of events unfolded just after 2:30 p.m. on Thursday afternoon in San Jose.

Mohamed Husien, 30, stole a green Corvette at gunpoint from a Chevrolet dealership, triggering a helicopter pursuit, according to the San Jose Police Department (SJPD).

The vehicle was reportedly disabled remotely when Husien reached the city of Hollister, roughly 50 miles away.

Witness footage shows Husien emerge from the Corvette brandishing a pistol with an extended magazine and flee on foot through a residential neighborhood as officers fire several rounds at him.

Husien then engaged San Benito Sheriff’s Department deputies in a gunfight before carjacking another vehicle and escaping.

As the suspect made his way back to San Jose, he opened fire on California Highway Patrol from inside the moving vehicle.

When Husien reached San Jose surface streets, he collided with a stopped vehicle at a busy intersection and bailed out on foot.

Aerial footage of the ensuing shootout has been circulating on social media.

Husien can be seen dodging an SJPD patrol SUV that nearly ran him over before charging at the officer driving it and opening fire at close range, striking the sergeant in the head.

Husien briefly entered the patrol vehicle before jumping back out and running away.

He was apparently struck by several rounds fired by SJPD officers and crumpled onto the roadway before being run over by another patrol vehicle.

Husien, a convicted felon, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

“During a subsequent investigation, SJPD Detectives discovered that Suspect Husien had engaged in a crime spree the weekend prior, spanning from armed carjackings to armed robberies in multiple jurisdictions,” SJPD explained in a press release.

The sergeant was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition where he was treated for a fractured skull and stabilized.

“Every officer involved in yesterday’s harrowing incident will carry the heaviness of what happened for the rest of their lives,” stated SJPD Chief Paul Joseph.

“Some members of the public who were caught in the crossfire described it as the closest thing to war they have ever witnessed—and that gives you a sense of how intense and terrifying those moments were, not just for officers, but for the community.”
