A veteran U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) agent was reportedly shot dead by an illegal alien in Vermont just hours after President Trump was sworn back into office.

The shocking incident unfolded at around 3:15 p.m. on Monday in Coventry, a town in Orleans County near the Canadian border.

During a traffic stop on Interstate 91, suspects reportedly opened fire on USBP Agent David Maland and a gun battle ensued.

Agent Maland and one of the suspects were killed during the exchange, while a female suspect was wounded and taken into custody at the scene.

The shooter was a German national who had overstayed an H-1B visa and was in the U.S. illegally, DHS sources told NewsNation correspondent Ali Bradley.

“The female was also wounded (no update on her status). The Border Patrol agent, identified as 44 y/o David Maland was shot and later succumbed to his injuries. His partner was not injured,” Bradley reported.

Agent Maland reportedly served for nearly 10 years in USBP and had recently transferred from Texas to Swanton Sector, which has experienced a historic surge of illegal crossings in recent years.

“FBI Albany is investigating an alleged assault on a federal officer in connection with a fatal shooting involving a U.S. Border Patrol Agent in Coventry, Vermont,” the FBI confirmed in a statement on Monday night.

Additional details about this investigation remain limited.
