An African male working as a corrections officer in Maine despite potentially being in the U.S. illegally was nabbed by federal immigration agents this week.
The apprehension reportedly took place just after 5 p.m. on Wednesday in Portland.
Local media indicates a man identified as Mauro Inacio Bernardo was arrested during a targeted traffic stop in the Bayside neighborhood.
Footage purportedly shot by a witness shows a black male resisting federal officers while yelling, “I am a corrections officer.”
“I’m coming from work. My uniform is right there.”

Bernardo’s hiring was reportedly approved during a York County Commissioners meeting in March of 2024.
“That meeting revealed that Bernardo was a teacher in Angola and that he arrived in the U.S. in the spring of 2023. The corrections officer position was his first since entering the U.S.,” the Maine Wire reports.
Commissioners claimed that Bernardo had full work authorization.
Cumberland County Sheriff Kevin Joyce told reporters he did not know Bernardo’s current immigration status or under what circumstances he entered the U.S.
“I was told he’s illegally in the United States,” Sheriff Joyce stated during a press conference on Thursday.

In July, federal authorities arrested an illegal alien from Jamaica who was working as a police officer in Old Orchard Beach, Maine.
