A Mexican citizen suspected of smuggling fellow illegal aliens is facing a slew of charges after he led police on a dangerous pursuit that ended in a fatal crash over the weekend, Texas authorities say.
On Tuesday, the Texas Department of Public Safety (TxDPS) released details about the deadly incident, which unfolded in South Texas on Saturday evening.
Initially, the driver of a stolen Dodge Ram pickup reportedly circumvented a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint on Interstate 35 in Webb County.
When a TxDPS trooper attempted to initiate a stop, the driver fled, triggering a high-speed chase in the northbound lanes of I-35.
The suspect eventually lost control, striking a guardrail and rolling the vehicle.

“A total of six illegal immigrants were apprehended and referred to the United States Border Patrol; furthermore, because of the crash, an unknown male passenger was pronounced deceased at the scene,” TxDPS spokesman Lt. Chris Olivarez explained in a statement.
The driver managed to escape but was tracked down a short time later.
He was identified as Arnulfo Vazquez Longoria, a 21-year-old citizen of Mexico from Coahuila state.
Longoria was arrested and booked into La Salle County jail on charges including smuggling of persons, smuggling of persons causing death, evading arrest causing serious bodily injury or death, evading arrest, and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
An investigation is ongoing.
