A suspected illegal alien from Mexico is facing a slew of charges after he allegedly drove into oncoming traffic while drunk, striking two vehicles and killing one of the drivers in Arkansas last week, according to reports.
The horrifying incident unfolded at around 10 p.m. on Feb. 27 in Jonesboro, a city in Craighead County.
Arturo Chacon-Montiel, 26, swerved across a divider in his Dodge Ram pickup and struck a car driven by Lakeshia Haskins of Jonesboro, K8 News reports, citing court documents.
Chacon-Montiel’s truck then traveled further across opposing lanes and hit a Toyota Camry driven by Larry Traylor of West Memphis, TN.
Traylor was killed almost instantly, while Haskins and a passenger in her car were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
Officers “could smell the odor of intoxicants and observed an open container in the vehicle,” according to Detective Luke Lane.
“Arturo Chacon did not have a driver’s license,” Detective Lane stated in an arrest affidavit. “The only identification was a Mexico ID.”
Chacon-Montiel was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.
He has since been charged with negligent homicide, reckless driving, possession of an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, no driver’s license, no proof of liability insurance, driving while intoxicated, and driving without a seat belt.

Chacon-Montiel was ordered held on $1.5 million cash bond, but will not be released even if he posts as Immigration and Customs Enforcement has also lodged a detainer against him, which the Craighead County Detention Center has indicated it will honor.
