An illegal alien is facing a slew of charges in connection with a drunk-driving collision that claimed the life of a child in Georgia, authorities say.
On Tuesday, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced that a detainer has been lodged against Jose Alejandro Cuahuizo-Varela, who is currently being held by the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.
On Sept. 6, Latazamisha Nunn was pulling out of an apartment complex in Dunwoody when a Toyota pickup truck driven by Cuahuizo-Varela slammed into her Honda, investigators say.
Nunn and her daughter Maryah Johnson, 8, were rushed to local hospitals but the young girl did not survive.
Cuahuizo-Varela reportedly fled the scene but was caught a short time later by local police.
He was charged with first-degree homicide by vehicle, serious injury by vehicle, reckless driving, hit and run, driving under the influence of alcohol, and driving without a valid license.
Disturbingly, Cuahuizo-Varela was on the loose despite facing nearly identical charges for another DUI hit-and-run in nearby Brookhaven in 2023.
“If ICE would’ve done its job in the first place and picked him up, my daughter wouldn’t be in this type of predicament,” Nunn told WSB-TV this week.
“If you all retrieved him the first time it happened and he sent three people to the hospital, my daughter would still be alive right here.”

ICE has confirmed that Cuahuizo-Varela “illegally entered the United States,” but additional details remain limited at this time.
Last week, 8-year-old Mora Gerety was fatally struck by the driver of a pickup truck in Boise, ID.

Elvin Ramos-Caballero, an illegal alien from Honduras who was under a final order of removal, is now in ICE custody in connection with that incident.
