Nearly 100 Haitian nationals were sent home this week after their boat was intercepted by the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) during an “unlawful maritime migration attempt.”
Last Thursday, a Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations crew spotted a rickety 35-foot vessel at sea as it headed north in the direction of the Turks and Caicos Islands.
USCG District Seven watchstanders were alerted and the overloaded watercraft was interdicted roughly 35 miles north of Cap-Haitien, Haiti.
On Tuesday, 99 Haitians were repatriated by the crew of USCG Cutter Seneca.

“The Coast Guard remains steadfast in our defense of the U.S. maritime borders and approaches with patrols in the Florida Straits, Windward and Mona Passages to interdict unlawful maritime migration attempts before they reach our shores,” said Lt. Cmdr. Brent Pearson, Coast Guard liaison officer to the U.S. Embassy at Port-au-Prince.
“Attempting illegal migration in overloaded, unsafe vessels with no safety equipment is extremely dangerous and puts you and your loved one’s lives at risk. Don’t take to the sea just to be sent back.”
Last month, USCG intercepted another vessel carrying 32 aliens in waters near the Dominican Republic.
