An Egyptian traveler who injured a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) K9 at a Washington, D.C. airport this week has been removed from the country, authorities say.
The disturbing incident unfolded on Tuesday at Dulles International Airport.
Freddie, a beagle who inspects baggage at the port of entry, alerted to a suitcase belonging to 70-year-old Hamed Ramadan Bayoumy Aly Marie.
“As the CBP canine handler started questioning Marie, he violently kicked Freddie with sufficient force to lift the 25-pound beagle off the ground,” CBP explained in a press release.
“CBP officers immediately descended upon Marie, handcuffed him, and turned him over to Homeland Security Investigations agents for prosecution.”

CBP specialists found more than 100 pounds of prohibited agricultural products inside Marie’s luggage, including 55 pounds of beef meat, 44 pounds of rice, and more than 15 pounds of vegetables, herbs, and seeds.
On Wednesday, Marie pleaded guilty to harming animals used in law enforcement during an initial appearance in U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Virginia.
He was credited for time served and ordered to pay Freddie’s veterinarian’s fee.
Marie immediately reported to CBP for removal and left the U.S. on a flight bound for Egypt on Thursday afternoon.
Freddie suffered bruising to his rib area but is expected to recover.
“Being caught deliberately smuggling well over one hundred pounds of undeclared and prohibited agriculture products does not give one permission to violently assault a defenseless Customs and Border Protection beagle,” said Christine Waugh, CBP’s Area Port Director for the Area Port of Washington, D.C.
“We rely heavily on our K9 partners and Freddie was just doing his job. Any malicious attack on one of us is an attack on all of us, and CBP will continue to work with our investigating and prosecuting partners to deal swift and severe justice to perpetrators.”
