An illegal alien who was charged with raping a child in the sanctuary state of Massachusetts and then released has been captured by federal immigration authorities after months on the loose.
On Friday, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced the recent apprehension of Selvin Alex Galvez-Mejia, a Guatemalan citizen who illegally entered the U.S. as an ‘unknown gotaway’ at an unknown location or date.
On July 18, Galvez-Mejia was arraigned in Springfield District Court on two counts aggravated rape of a child and indecent assault and battery on a victim 14 years of age or older.
Galvez-Mejia was subsequently released on bond and remained on the loose in Massachusetts for around three months.
ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) agents from the Boston office finally apprehended the suspected child rapist on October 18 and issued him a notice to appear before a Department of Justice immigration judge.
“Selvin Alex Galvez-Mejia stands accused of horrifically victimizing a Massachusetts child and represents a significant threat to our neighborhoods,” ERO Boston acting Field Office Director Patricia H. Hyde said in a statement.
“We owe it to the children of our New England communities to prioritize public safety by arresting and removing egregious noncitizen threats.”
Galvez-Mejia remains in ICE custody awaiting his hearing.
In 2017, a Massachusetts Supreme Court ruling established the state as a de facto sanctuary for illegal aliens.
Authorities continue to catch dangerous foreign criminals illegally present in the U.S., many of whom have been previously released into the country by law enforcement agencies.
