Federal authorities have confirmed that a Mexican suspect arrested for killing a young couple in a drunk-driving collision in North Carolina last week is in the U.S. illegally.
The tragedy unfolded at around 11 p.m. on Jan. 16 in Rowan County.
Investigators believe Juan Alvarado-Aguilar, 37, drifted into oncoming traffic in his pickup truck, slamming head-on into a Honda Accord carrying Fletcher Harris, 20, and Skylar Provenza, 19, the Salisbury Post reports.
Provenza and Harris, who were dating, were both killed in the crash.
Alvarado-Aguilar was charged with two counts of felony causing death by a motor vehicle, driving while intoxicated, traveling left of the center line, and driving while his license was revoked.
He is being held on $5 million bond along with an additional $1,500 bond for failure to appear for another DWI in Cabarrus County, NC.
Additionally, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has lodged a detainer request against Alvarado-Aguilar, who is in the U.S. illegally.
Alvarado-Aguilar entered the U.S. on a temporary work visa in 2020 and failed to depart on time, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
“Fletcher and Skylar had their whole lives ahead of them. They would still be with us today if not for Juan Alvarado-Aguilar, a criminal illegal alien from Mexico, who chose to recklessly drive drunk on our roads,” said DHS Secretary Kristi Noem.
“Under President Trump, dangerous foreign criminals with no right to be in the U.S. are being arrested and removed daily. ICE has lodged an arrest detainer with the Rowan County Jail to ensure this criminal is not allowed back into our communities and is removed from the U.S. once and for all.”
Illegal alien drivers continue to destroy American lives on a near-daily basis.
