U.S. authorities intercepted a boatload of ‘migrants’ bound for California this week, one of whom died.
The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) was alerted about a suspected smuggling vessel near San Clemente Island at around noon on Wednesday.
Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations quickly located the watercraft and conducted a boarding.
Agents encountered 21 aliens, including an unresponsive 56-year-old male.
USCG responders administered CPR to the man until an aircrew could hoist and transport him to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles.
Hospital staff successfully restored the man’s pulse but he was pronounced deceased a short time later.
The remaining 20 aliens were transferred to custody of U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) for processing.
