An illegal alien from Georgia is accused of causing a multi-vehicle highway accident that claimed the life of an Indiana National Guard soldier last weekend, authorities say.
The horrifying incident unfolded at around noon on Friday in Boone County, IN.
A military convoy was traveling from Frankfort Armory for a drill weekend at Camp Atterbury when a Humvee was run off Interstate 65 by the driver of a car hauler truck who “abruptly” changed lanes, officials say.
The soldier driving the Humvee reportedly lost control and the military vehicle rolled several times before hitting a Subaru driven by a woman from Kentucky who was treated at the scene.
First responders located four injured National Guardsmen, including one who was unconscious.
Spc. Terry Frye, a 23-year-old father from Lafayette, IN, was pronounced deceased while his fellow Guardsmen were transported to a local hospital and treated for significant injuries.
The driver of the car hauler was identified as Goderdzi Gujabidze, 56, of Brooklyn, NY.
Because Gujabidze could not communicate in English, he was taken to the Boone County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) to meet with a translator.
Gujabidze was subsequently taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Authorities have since confirmed that Gujabidze is a citizen of Georgia who is illegally present in the U.S.

“Indiana National Guardsman Terry Frye should still be alive. His life was cut short on I-65 by an illegal who never should’ve been here in the first place,” Sen. Jim Banks (R-IN) stated on Monday.
“I fully support President Trump’s mission to deport everyone here illegally so we can prevent tragedies like this from ever happening again.”
Sen. Banks’ comments were not received well by Frye’s family, who issued a public statement slamming him for ‘politicizing’ the tragedy.
“Terry’s death is not a political prop. He was a son, a father, a soldier, and a deeply loved member of our family long before he was a headline. Turning the worst moment of our lives into a talking point for any political agenda is inappropriate and hurtful,” the family told WTHR.
“We ask that you honor his memory by speaking about him with respect, without attaching his name to partisan statements or policy debates. Our family will not allow his death to be used to score political points.”
Other Guardsmen involved in the crash have been identified by BCSO as follows:
- Izaya Phillips, 21 (driver)
- Nicholas Reinhart, 27
- Luke Richardson, 23
“All four soldiers served in Company D in the 2nd Battalion of the 151st Infantry Regiment. Frye had served there since March 2020 as an infantryman, earning both the Nation Defense Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon,” ABC 57 reports.
An investigation is ongoing.
