The New Yorker Targets Border Hawk With Low Energy Hit Piece

SHARE:

Radically left-wing magazine The New Yorker just published a lengthy, low-energy hit piece on Border Hawk, insinuating our reporting amounts to little more than “fearmongering” and unfounded, racist conspiracy theories about the ongoing invasion of the United States.

In a feature entitled, “How the Far Right Reports on the Border,” the 100-year old publication signaled it is threatened by grassroots journalists who report truthfully on a historic mass migration crisis that poses an existential threat to Western Civilization.

Despite boasting 8.5 million followers on X, The New Yorker’s initial share of the article accumulated a meager 49 likes and 23 reposts at the time of this writing, five days later.

A review of all 34 replies to the post indicates 100 percent of users voiced appreciation for Border Hawk and/or mocked The New Yorker for their half-hearted attempt to smear our organization.

Subsequent shares of the piece have failed to crack the 10-like mark.

In contrast, Border Hawk highlighted the article for our 25,000 followers and quickly racked up far more appreciation and full-throated support for our mission: authentic, original border and immigration reporting.

While the message conveyed by author Rachel Monroe (who apparently left X in favor of Bluesky shortly before publication) lacked some of the deeply insidious vitriol hurled at Border Hawk by the Southern Poverty Law Center earlier this year, the undertones rhymed.

“Border Hawk presents itself as a grassroots organization offering an honest view of the southern border. But the site is intimately entwined with a long-standing anti-immigrant movement that, until recently, was widely rejected,” Monroe wrote.

“Border Hawk is a nonprofit, and cannot endorse political parties or candidates, but the site has consistently depicted the border as out of control, and migrants as criminals and invaders.”

Monroe went on to besmirch the Lyman family, members of which founded and run the Border Hawk operation, as de facto anti-immigrant zealots whose defense of American laws and values are beyond the pale.

“As Lyman tells it, for most of his life he was more interested in sports than politics. He and his older brother, Dan, grew up in Amherst, where their father was a professor at the University of Massachusetts and their mother, Izzy, who also has a Ph.D., was an evangelist for homeschooling. Wid speculated that the liberal environment of New England pushed his mother’s politics rightward,” Monroe wrote.

“Whatever the reason, the Lymans have made fearmongering about immigrants into a family business. Izzy is the editor of ‘Victims of Illegal Immigration,’ an essay collection with a lurid blood-splattered cover, published by Social Contract Press, another U.S., Inc. project. Dan is the president and editor-in-chief of Border Hawk, as well as an occasional contributor to Infowars. In an interview with Peter Brimelow, the VDARE founder, posted on X earlier this year, Dan Lyman called ending birthright citizenship ‘a no-brainer’ and warned of ‘the destruction of white America’ by immigration.”

Border Hawk senior correspondent Wid Lyman, the primary subject of the piece, posted a rebuttal to The New Yorker, as follows:

The New Yorker published an article about me and Border Hawk with the heading, “How The Far Right Reports On The Border.”

I would like to add greater clarity and additional information to the article and, perhaps, quell the bias.

Mentions of Mt. Cristo Rey in New Mexico portray it as a lovely hike for most people, the presence of illegals is rare, and that my interpretation that it is a dangerous place is misleading, even down to the music.

I have hiked that mountain many times and encountered scores of illegals using scouts/spotters to evade law enforcement. Locals and Border Patrol agents nicknamed it “Cartel Mountain” and have freely admitted to “losing control” of the region to smuggling operators. There are piles of clothing, bottles, and other trash left by illegals, additionally indicating significant use.

The website for Mt. Cristo Rey reads, “Mt. Cristo Rey is open on a limited basis and for planned special events only. You may climb on your own but you do climb at your own risk. There is no security on site and no first aid unless we have a scheduled event. YOU DO CLIMB AT YOUR OWN RISK!”

“Due to the proximity of Mexico on the Southern edge of the mountain, visitors are cautioned to not climb alone and always go in groups. Vandalism, assaults and robberies are still an ongoing problem and visitors are encouraged to visit on days when organized events are being held and security is on site.”

The New Yorker: “Whatever the reason, the Lymans have made fearmongering about immigrants a family business.”

Let me tell you some facts about my family.

My mother, Izzy, is a first generation American whose parents emigrated from Costa Rica. She holds a Ph.D. from Universidad de San Jose and defended her dissertation exclusively in Spanish. She is also the founder of Border Hawk, and John Tanton had no part in the creation of the organization.

Roberto, my grandfather (Izzy’s father), built one of the largest international freight forwarding companies in Miami, FL. He joined the U.S. Army and is now laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery. Everyone who is a part of Border Hawk is either latino or married to a latino/a.

Me: I graduated from York College of PA with a BA in Public Relations with an emphasis in Crisis Communication. I pursued further education in Physical Therapy but have taken classes in Media Law, Public Relations, Mass Communications, Publication Editing, Print Media Writing, Communication Theory, and so on.

My brother, Dan, is not an “occasional contributor to InfoWars.” He has worked there for almost a decade and written thousands of articles for IW.

I did an extensive thread on the statements about migrants committing crimes at lower rates than native-born Americans.

Our mission at Border Hawk is authentic coverage – what’s actually happening on the ground without downplaying the severity of the situation. My family has cared about this issue for decades, and I can assure you no one has made any substantial profit from this venture. We have given thousands of hours of our own time in pursuit of truth. We also highlight the victims of illegal migrants, because they are a forgotten people.

I want to thank Ms. Monroe and The New Yorker for the feature. Everyone I worked with – the editors, fact-checkers, photographer, and Ms. Monroe herself – were professional and kind.

I leave you with this:

A brief, non-exhaustive list of people whose lives have been lost or destroyed by illegal aliens and who were featured in our Victims of Illegal Immigration series.

Because their stories deserve to be told.

You are never forgotten.

Bob Barry, Jr., Jesse Benavides, Casey Chadwick, Dominic Durden, Spencer Goldvach, Marten Kudlis, Dustin Inman, Denny McCann, Brandon Mendoza, Danny Oliver, Marilyn Pharis, Grant Ronnebeck, Jamiel Shaw, Louise Sollowin, Kate Steinle, Josh Wilkerson, Robert Rosas, James Gadiel, Shatavia Anderson, Shyima, Rob Krentz, Marilyn Bethell, America Thayer, Ashton Cline-McMurray, Bambi Larson, Cheston Edwards, Connor Holcomb, David March, Drew Rosenberg, Hailey King, Iriana DeJesus, Joe Storie, Maria Fuertes, Matthew Denice, Mollie Tibbetts, Nazareth Tamer-Claure, Tierra Stansberry

Here at Border Hawk, we welcome scrutiny of our work – primarily of its accuracy.

We will not be deterred from our mission to provide honest border and immigration coverage for our readers and supporters.

We invite inquiry from anyone who wishes to know more about how open borders and rampant mass migration are affecting host nations, and why we do what we do.

Please feel free to reach out.
