San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond reports:
A new proposal by my colleague would block collaboration between local law enforcement and ICE, making it harder to deport illegal immigrants who have committed serious crimes in San Diego County.
Currently, ICE can step in to handle egregious cases like child abuse, firearm offenses, gang activity, burglary, theft, and fraud. They can interview suspects, deport them, and ensure our communities are protected when these criminals are released from jail. This collaboration would be severely restricted, requiring a warrant from a state or federal judge before ICE can take action.
The result? More dangerous criminals remain in our neighborhoods. This move would make San Diego County even more of a sanctuary for criminals than the rest of California.
Public safety should always come first. Law enforcement agencies must work together to protect our communities and remove the criminal elements who exploit our border policies.
This proposal doesn’t just make us less safe—it undermines the trust and collaboration needed to uphold the law.
