U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) agents caught a top cartel operative at the northern border in the latest significant arrest of a criminal illegal alien in Michigan.

On Saturday, USBP Detroit Sector Chief John R. Morris announced the recent apprehension of Melquiades Salgado-Garza in Gibraltar, a small city on the Detroit River directly across from Ontario.

Agents from Gibraltar station assisted local authorities in arresting Salgado-Garza, a “leader of hitmen with the Gulf cartel,” according to Chief Morris.

“Salgado’s criminal history includes felony charges for burglary, forgery and immigration.”

The Gulf Cartel is a powerful international criminal network founded in Mexico and considered one of the oldest in the country.

Last weekend, USBP agents captured a Tren de Aragua gangbanger who was in the process of committing a crime on Michigan’s remote Upper Peninsula.

The Venezuelan illegal was “attempting to retrieve a previously seized vehicle” in Sault Ste. Marie at the time of his apprehension, USBP Chief Mike Banks explained.

Days later, a Special Interest Alien from Uzbekistan was caught by USBP agents from Sault Ste. Marie Station.

A Special Interest Alien potentially poses a national security risk to the United States or its interests, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
